As the son of Egyptian gods Osiris and Isis, Horus was destined for greatness from birth. However, when Horus was an infant, his uncle Seth (Set) killed his brother Osiris, causing Isis to hide her son in the marshlands of the Nile River to protect him. Once Horus grew strong enough to battle his uncle for the throne, they competed in a series of feats that lasted over 80 years. Finally, Horus was declared the winner and took his place as king. Because of this, Egyptians associated Horus with the title of kingship and believed Horus to be the first divine king of Egypt. Horus’s appearance is recognizable, with the head of a falcon and the body of a human man. Usually depicted wearing a pschent (a red and white crown) as a symbol of kingship, Horus also holds a scepter and an ankh (a symbol of life) in many renderings. Portrayals of Horus have cropped up in movies, TV shows, and even video games in recent years. Now coin collectors can add this Egyptian God to their portfolios as well!
