Liopleurodon first came to public attention in the BBC documentary Dinosaur - In the Realm of the Giants. Where it was depicted as a 25 metre long apex predator. Making it the largest known predator of the Mesozoic era. This enormous size is based on a fragmentary find in Mexico. This "monster of Aramberri" was estimated to be 18 metres long, and that was from a juvenile specimen. It was also mentioned in the documentary that the animal itself was quite large for its species. However, the fossil now belongs to an undescribed species, its size is estimated at only 15 metres based on recent comparisons, and it is probably an adult specimen after all.
